Grades K-4 Report Cards

Starting with the 2024-25 school year, each of our K-4 elementary schools will use a new rating scale on their report cards. Instead of averaging scores and receiving a number rating of 1, 2, 3, or 4, the report card will show how well your child progressed that trimester by using a “Beginning,” “Developing,” and “Proficient” rating, as explained below.

The Why

As you already know, our standards-based report cards list the skills your child is aiming to achieve by the end of the year. Think of these skills like ingredients in a recipe. If a skill isn't mastered, it's like missing a key ingredient in a dish—it affects the overall outcome.

The new rating scale more thoroughly explains where your child is on their learning journey. It's designed to give you insights into their strengths and areas for improvement, helping us work together to support their learning effectively.

Thank you for your partnership in your child's education. Together, we empower our students to Learn Without Limits.

Rating Scale Explanation. What Does B, D, and P Mean?

Beginning

“B” on the report card indicates that your child is "BEGINNING" to understand a skill as they are not secure in it at this time. This means that your child is not understanding the concept on their own. This may indicate that the skill has just been introduced to your child and they just haven’t grasped an understanding of what they should be doing yet, or it may indicate that your child needs more work on this skill. At the beginning of the year, a “B” should be less concerning than a “B” during the third trimester.

Developing

“D” on the report card indicates that your child is "DEVELOPING" toward showing proficiency in a skill of the current trimester. He or she can meet the expectations with some teacher assistance and support. They are continuing to develop this skill. When new material is introduced, we expect your child to be at a “D.” As they grow more secure in the skill, we expect they will become more independent and move to a “P.” During the first and second trimesters, it will not be uncommon to see “D's" on the report card. During these trimesters, students are learning many new skills. As the year goes on, your child should work toward turning those “D's" into “P's."

Proficient

“P” means that your child is "PROFICIENT" in a certain skill of the current trimester. This is what your child should be working towards. Developmentally, this is where your child should be at the skill level by the end of the year. This grade means your child consistently and independently knows and understands that skill.

If your child exceeds expectations for the grade level in a particular subject area, it will be noted in the comments section.
